Invest in Safety-net Programs to Halt Growing Hunger

Globally, hundreds of millions of people are on the brink of starvation. And levels of U.S hunger are now higher than during the Great Depression.

Your persistent advocacy last year helped extend both Pandemic-EBT and SNAP food benefits, bringing hope to millions of families in the U.S. Yet, Congress failed to provide adequate funding for a global response.

Globally, an investment of at least $20 billion is urgently needed to halt skyrocketing hunger.

I am grateful that the last Congress extended Pandemic-EBT and SNAP benefits in the COVID-19 relief bills--but it is just not enough.

The global pandemic continues to devastate vulnerable communities across the United States with a disproportionate impact on Black, Indigenous, people of color, and immigrants, and worsening the effects of hunger and poverty around the globe.

The pandemic has exposed the vulnerabilities in our safety net and food systems. Specifically, Congress should:

** Make permanent the 15 percent increase in SNAP benefits to ensure vulnerable U.S. families have the nutrition they need during tough times.
** Make permanent the summer EBT program to ensure that any time children miss school meals, they don't miss out on nutrition.
** Invest $20 billion for the global response to COVID-19 to avert a human catastrophe that will rob an entire generation of their God-given right to flourish.

These unprecedented times call for unprecedented courage and action. God calls on us to care for our neighbors in need (Matthew 25:35, 40). 
 
In the next COVID-19 relief bill or fiscal year 2021 appropriations, I urge you to make permanent the summer EBT program, the 15 percent SNAP increase, and invest $20 billion for the global response to COVID-19.
