The pandemic is devastating vulnerable communities across the United States--worsening the effects of hunger and poverty in the U.S. and around the globe.

Nearly 8 million people in the U.S. have slipped into poverty since May. Black and Latino families in the U.S. are more than twice as likely as white families to report that their households do not get enough to eat. Without action, the hardship and hunger will continue. People need help now.

I strongly urge you to immediately boost SNAP maximum benefits by 15 percent to ensure that the most vulnerable populations in the U.S. have access to the resources they need during the pandemic.

SNAP is vital in supporting the most vulnerable, but also has a strong economic impact as every $1 increase in SNAP benefits generates more than $1.50 in economic activity. Additionally, USDA estimates that $1 billion in new SNAP benefits issued during a recession raises GDP by $1.54 billion and supports 13,560 jobs. During this pandemic we should ensure that those who need help the most are provided with the resources they need.

God calls on us to care for the "least among us." Congress should heed that call and boost SNAP maximum benefits by 15 percent so families can receive help during this difficult time.
